Golden Binary Gravitational-wave Sources: Robust Probes of Strong-Field Gravity
نویسندگان
چکیده
Space-born gravitational-wave interferometers such as LISA will detect the gravitational wave (GW) signal from the inspiral, plunge and ringdown phases of massive black hole binary mergers at cosmological distances. From the inspiral waves, we will be able to measure the masses of the binaries’ members; from the ringdown waves, we will be able to measure the mass of the final merged remnant. A subset of detected events allow the identification of both the inspiral and the ringdown waveforms in a given source, and thus allow a measurement of the total mass-energy lost to GWs over the coalescence, MGW. We define “golden” binary mergers to be those with measurement errors likely to be small enough for a physically useful determination of MGW. A detailed sensitivity study, combined with simple black hole population models, suggests that a few golden binary mergers may be detected during a 3-year LISA mission lifetime. Any such mass deficit measurement would constitute a robust and valuable observational test of strong-field relativistic gravity. An extension of this concept to include spin measurements may allow a direct empirical test of the black hole area theorem. متن کاملGravitational-wave versus binary-pulsar tests of strong-field gravity
Binary systems comprising at least one neutron star contain strong gravitational field regions and thereby provide a testing ground for strong-field gravity. Two types of data can be used to test the law of gravity in compact binaries: binary pulsar observations, or forthcoming gravitational-wave observations of inspiralling binaries. We compare the probing power of these two types of observati...
متن کاملTheoretical Physics Implications of the Binary Black-Hole Mergers GW150914 and GW151226
The gravitational wave observations GW150914 and GW151226 by Advanced LIGO provide the first opportunity to learn about physics in the extreme gravity environment of coalescing binary black holes. The LIGO Scientific Collaboration and the Virgo Collaboration have verified that this observation is consistent with Einstein’s theory of General Relativity, constraining the presence of certain param...
متن کاملComparing Solar - System , Binary - Pulsar , and Gravitational - Wave Tests of Gravity
This talk is based on my work in collaboration with Thibault Damour. We compare the probing power of different classes of gravity experiments: solar-system tests (weak-field regime), binary-pulsar tests (strong-field regime), and future gravitational-wave observations of inspi-ralling binaries (strong-field effects detected in our weak-gravitational-field conditions). This is done within the mo...
متن کاملWill Einstein Have the Last Word on Gravity? Gravitational wave observations probe strong-field nonlinear gravity
This is a whitepaper submitted to the 2010 Astronomy Decadal Review process, addressing the potential tests of gravity theory that could be made by observations of gravitational waves in the milliHertz frequency band by the proposed ESA-NASA gravitational wave observatory LISA. A key issue is that observations in this band of binary systems consisting of black holes offer very clean tests with ...
